Chapter VII of VIII · Ask Astra

Questions about the house, with the source shown

Astra answers plain-English questions using the information stored in a property's own home manual, with sources, and clear limits.

What you can ask

Every new home manual includes its first year of Astra, powered by Werner Harmonic Labs. Type a question in plain English and Astra looks for the answer in that home’s record.

  • Model and serial numbers, filter sizes, install dates
  • Where a manual, receipt or warranty is filed
  • When something was last serviced and what is due next
  • Low-risk upkeep, such as how to change a filter

An example

This is the exchange shown in the Oakridge demonstration, a fictional residence. The answer comes from that record and names the document it used.

An example exchange

“What type of HVAC system do I have and when was it last serviced?”

You have a dual-zone Lennox XC20 system. It was last serviced on May 12, 2024.

Sources and limits

Astra shows the source it used alongside the answer. Information on the home record is stated plainly. A detail that appears only in an uploaded document and has not been approved is labelled as not yet confirmed, and material found on the web about the equipment is labelled as a web source.

Astra is instructed to say when the record does not contain an answer. It can still get things wrong, so check anything important against the source it shows. It does not change the record; people add and approve what goes on it.

Astra does not make a repair “safe.” For gas, electrical, structural and other higher-risk questions, it puts safety and a licensed professional ahead of any do-it-yourself steps.

In development

Planned for Astra. None of these is available today.

  • Asking about a photo, such as a picture of an equipment label
  • Asking about the contents of one specific document
  • Comparing records across several homes or managed properties

In the demonstration

Ask Astra about the Oakridge Residence, a fictional demonstration manual, and check the source shown with the answer.
